Since October 2017, there is a new star in the crypto sky: Tezos. The special feature: Tezos offers companies (and private individuals) a transaction environment in which they can realise business models based on tokens. And all this without having to develop a blockchain!

In this article, we show how and where you can best buy Tezos, which exchanges there are and whether you can also get XTZ tokens with PayPal, SOFORT-Überweisung and Co.

Buying Tezos: What to look out for

As Tezos has some differences to Bitcoin & Co, there are also differences when buying Bitcoin. Above all, you should pay attention to the following factors:

  • Where was the best place to buy Tezos?
  • Do I want to hold Tezos for the long term, use it for IoT applications or speculate on the share price?
  • How does a Tezos Wallet work?
  • Is it worth investing in Tezos?

Broker or stock exchange: Where is the best place to buy Tezos?

Now that we have shown one way to buy Tezos quickly, easily and safely, there are of course other ways. The question of how and where best to buy Tezos is strongly related to the second question, namely whether one wants to hold Tezos for the long term or rather speculate on the price development in the short term.

For short-term speculation, a CFD broker is recommended, where you speculate on the price development of Tezos without holding the underlying asset directly. The advantage of a broker is that you can also trade with leverage, so that even small price fluctuations can result in high profits or losses.

If you want to hold Tezos for a longer period of time, you are better off with a crypto exchange:

To buy Tezos or not?

It is not easy to say whether it is worth investing in Tezos. In general, the crypto market is subject to great fluctuations. In addition, regulations are still lacking, which is why fraud with cryptocurrencies is still flourishing. For these reasons, you should not choose your investment lightly. Of course, this also applies to Tezos. On the other hand, Tezos is already quite strong despite its young history. The large market capitalisation promises a comparatively manageable risk compared to other cryptocurrencies.

Pros and cons of Tezos Investment

Tezos (XTZ) is a decentralised, blockchain-based cryptocurrency and a platform for decentralised applications. Like Ethereum, the platform offers a development environment in which companies or even private individuals can implement their own token-based business models without first having to develop a blockchain themselves. That is why smart contracts are a fundamental part of the Tezos ecosystem.

Tezos uses a delegated proof-of-work algorithm (DPoS) that allows stakeholders to influence the further development of the platform and be rewarded for validating transactions on the network. For example, stakeholders can decide to pay individuals or groups for their work on the Tezos protocol. In this way, Tezos promises, the ecosystem will optimise and evolve on its own.

Tezos officially launched in September 2018 after raising a record-breaking $232 million in an ICO. The development of the cryptocurrency was initiated in 2014 by founders Arthur and Kathleen Breitman with a core group of developers. The Tezos Foundation, led by Ryan Jesperson, is primarily responsible for asset management and the further development of the protocol and the Tezos ecosystem. The rights to the source code are held by the founding company Dynamic Ledger Solutions, whose managing directors are Kathleen and Arthur Breitman. The company DLS has its headquarters in Switzerland.

After the ICO, Tezos experienced distortions between the founding company DLS and the Tezos Foundation. The Tezos share price collapsed briefly as a result. After the then president of the Foundation, Johann Gevers, finally left the company as a result of the dispute (and received a severance payment of 400,000 US dollars), the problems subsided and the development of the Tezos ecosystem progressed. Today, Tezos ranks 17th in the ranking of the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, with a market capitalisation of around 700 million euros.

Tezos Wallets: Which wallets are useful for storage after purchase?

Is a wallet required to trade with Tezos? Not necessarily. For example, on eToro it is possible to store Tezos on your account. However, it is recommended to transfer the coin to your own wallet. A software wallet is certainly a good option for your coins for the first time. If you want to hold Tezos for a longer period of time, however, we recommend a hardware wallet instead, as these are unsurpassed in terms of security.

There are many wallets with which you can store and use Tezos. You can read here which wallets the company recommends to its users. There is also support for the popular hardware wallets.

Since there are a number of criteria to be considered here that would go beyond the scope of this article, here is the link to the wallet comparison:

Alternatives to Tezos: buy other cryptocurrencies or shares

In various forums, people like to discuss how to buy Tezos shares. Such interested traders are a little ahead of their time.

Furthermore, Tezos is more involved in research and cooperates with reputable educational institutes such as the IMDEA Software Institute, Korea University Blockchain Reasearch Institute, Konkuk University and many more. As these companies are not public limited companies, alternatives are more likely to be competitors or products that are used to mine Tezos.

Alternative 1: Opportunities in the area of cryptocurrencies

Apart from that, there are also other cryptocurrencies that definitely have potential:

  • Buy Bitcoin: The top dog among cryptocurrencies is considered by many to be the “digital gold” and one of the most stable cryptos.
  • Buy Ripple: With the support of many banks, Ripple is a good alternative to Tezos.
  • Buy Ethereum: Ethereum is the solution for smart contracts and follows a broadly similar approach to Tezos.

Alternative 2: Crypto shares

Another alternative is crypto stocks: chip manufacturers, mining companies and even the Bitcoin Group have been able to post strong gains so far.

  • NVIDIA shares: NVIDIA produces important graphics chips especially for mining – if the crypto boom continues, NVIDIA is certainly a good investment
